Web Service Composition: Design and Analysis

The World Wide Web has been very successful in providing an infrastructure for sharing data between ad hoc software systems that are designed for predictable runtime environments (data structures or representations, system platforms, etc.). The goal of web services is a framework to enable rich, flexible, and dynamic interoperation of highly distributed and heterogeneous software systems and processes over the Internet. Such a framework is a key to meeting the challenge of managing a growing number of software components and to compose even more complex systems. An initial step has been taken by the IT industry and research communities to “encapsulate” software systems and processes as “Web services” defined in various forms (WSDL, BPEL, OWL-S, etc). Although web service development platforms have been available such as Microsoft’s .Net, IBM’s WebSphere, Sun’s J2EE, etc., there is a substantial lack of suitable technology concerning, in particular, the design and analysis of interoperating Web services or web-hosted processes in order to achieve the goal. This course aims at the fundamental concepts, principles, and techniques related to web services and their composition through examining current web service standards and behavior models, studying issues concerning interactions of services and service discovery, and exploring techniques in analysis and automated design of composite Web services.
